PERC works
The Penobscot Energy Recovery Company LP – known to everyone as PERC – plays an important role in Maine’s solid waste management system and hierarchy.
We receive household waste from municipalities and from commercial waste haulers who serve area businesses. We also can handle special waste materials, such as carpet and bulky waste. After processing the waste, we then use it as fuel to generate renewable electricity, reducing the volume of material that ends up in a landfill by 90%.
Our well-maintained facility, located on 42 acres along the Penobscot River in Orrington, Maine, consists of two major systems, front-end waste processing and electric power generation. Continuously upgraded over the years, the plant is run by skilled and dedicated employees, many of whom have been with us for 20 years or more.
Along with PERC’s owners, our managers and staff are committed to environmental stewardship, and our efforts have been recognized by both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
